I have started checking some activities because students were not finishing them in time for the notebook check. When I check these assignments, students are not given a grade on the assignment, but they are given a grade for attempting the assignment. This is more a participation grade that shows that they are organized, write down their work in their agenda, and then attempt to do the work to stay up to pace with the class. I'm hoping through doing this that students will be more prepared for class.
Because of the nature of this grade it is a relatively small number of points (5), but is an all or nothing grade - either they completed the work, or they didn't; there are no "half done" grades. Also note that most homework assignments represent classwork that was not completed in class - therefore, if they are using their time wisely in class they should not have more than 20 minutes.
