Causes of wind

Warm up: Students observed an image which showed two bottles. One with an inflated balloon on top and one with a deflated balloon on top. Describe the difference between the air in the two bottles, making sure to include temperature, and density.
Answer: The bottle with the inflated balloon has hot air, which is less dense and takes up more space, the deflated balloon has cold air which is denser and takes up less space.

Today we had such a wonderful time out by the ponds identifying our wide range of local birds! Students used binoculars and field guides and walked around the ponds area with Audubon volunteers!

Today we saw:
Cardinal, Blue Jay, Carolina Wren, Marsh Wren, Northern Mockingbird, Eastern Bluebird, Yellow-rumped warbler, Flicker, Osprey, Swallow-tailed Kite, Sand hill Crane, Turkey Vulture, Black Vulture, and American Crow!

You can earn up to 50 points Extra Credit total. Here's how:

Step 2: Choose 5 different events before March 30th. To get points, each event must be of a different kind (You get 10 points for each activity you attend). There are the following categories:

WATER SURVEY EXPLANATION

Students have been asked to monitor normal water usage in the home. Every day, they are to make a tally mark when people use appliances that use water. My suggestion is to have the family help out! Place the water survey in a prominent place (like on the refrigerator perhaps) and every time an appliance is used, have the member that used it put a tally. Alternatively, the student observes usage throughout the day and monitors on the survey sheet. This is will be a one week long assignment, we will review it next Thursday before the quiz.

Ocean Currents

Warm Up - When you see waves off heat rising off the ground during a dry summer, what form of heat transfer are you witnessing?
Answer: The waves of heat rising off the ground during the summer is caused by radiation, heat that travels in waves. The specific radiation you are witnessing is Infrared radiation, a form of electromagnetic wave sent out by anything that produces heat (including people!).

Media Center Project Follow-up

We are working on a Hallway long Geologic Time Scale for our building, where each class gets a geologic time period to display. My classes have Ordovician, Cambrian, and Precambrian time periods.

Warm up: If you find a rock sample that has 1/2 Uranium and 1/2 lead content, when was the rock formed?
Answer: The rock was formed 4.5 billion years ago (1/2 Uranium means 1 half-life; for Uranium that is 4.5 billion years)

EXTRA CREDIT OPPORTUNITY:

I have asked them to start working on posters (8.5 x 11) for their time period on the Hallway Geologic Time Scale. During class today I signed everyone up for either an animal, plant, or map of the earth. Students will have a test and notebook check next week and preparing for those is a priority. If they have time this weekend, it would be greatly appreciated if we could put up some cool pictures on Tuesday when they come to class. We will be spending all class period on Thursday finishing touches for our section.

WHAT IS AN ABOVE AND BEYOND?

Students have 3 options:

1. Write about a famous person relating to our unit
2. Write about an article in the newspaper that highlights a recent discovery relating to our unit
3. Write about an example having to do with our unit (ex - a fossil, a famous rock strata, a prehistoric being, a type of radio carbon dating)

Students must show proof of research, which means they can include the article or give a bibliographic reference.

Students must also have an original student response, which is a paragraph reaction to what they read.

3. Bibliography with resources
